Summary: Congratulations Fakir, you're getting married to a duck.
"Ahiru, willyoumarryme?"
This would probably be the happiest moment of your life if it wasn't so awkward. Especially since anyone that decided to take a stroll by the lake today just witnessed you propose to a duck.
Yeah...
So Fakir, how did this happen? Let's backtrack a little to see how it got this far.
-
You just found out she's a duck and now she's standing naked in front of you-
-
...Or maybe not.
But come on, you've gone through worse and managed to come out OK. After all, you're the knight that was fated to die, but instead went and turned your fate around to write an ending to the Prince's story. With Ahiru's help of course.
Proposing marriage? This should be a cakewalk. Only, unfortunately, it isn't.
In fact, nothing about this relationship is a cakewalk. You are in love with a duck, for petes sake. Or, more correctly, you're in love with the human she was before she became a duck once again. But then again, it's still the same person when you get down to it. Ahiru is still Ahiru, whether she's a duck or a human. Heck, sometimes you bicker with her despite the fact you can't even understand what you're bickering about.
You've probably spent several sleepless nights, trying to sort out your feelings for this girl.
Do you love her?
Yes
Enough to marry her?
...Yes
But you're still not having any luck writing her story so that she can be human again. Some nights, when you are sitting at your desk surrounded by papers with scribbled notes and ink stains and vaguely drafted stories about a simple boy and girl falling in love and all that other mushy stuff, you pull out that ring and think, "Is this what I want?"
It's a very beautiful diamond ring, by the way. Wasn't cheap either. You would like nothing more than to slide this ring on her finger and say that you want to spend the rest of your life with her. But she doesn't have fingers to speak of, not now anyway. You kept putting this off, telling yourself that you will write her story and make her human again, and then propose to her.
But it's been a few years...
...and ducks don't live as long as humans do.
You're on very borrowed time, mister.
And yet, there's no one else you can think of that you would want to spend the rest of your life with. Ahiru may be clutzy and quite the spazz, but she's also sweet and kind and...just, god, there's too many things that make Ahiru the perfect girl for you. You love her a lot more than you care to admit, there's no doubt about that.
So you decide that you would marry her regardless if you finished her story or not. You love her enough that even if you never finished her story, you would still live happily ever after.
And thus, here we are now. You took her down to the lake the two of you like to go to for relaxation, sitting on the edge and just talking about casual things, (of course with you doing most of the talking), about the weather, the Prince's story and wondering if Rue and Mytho (well, Seigfriend now) are doing alright, and assurance that you will finish her story someday even if it took another few years.
When you've run out of things to talk about and there's nothing but the sounds of insects buzzing on the water, you reach into your pocket, fingering the ring, once again internally debating if this is really the right time. But your mind is made up, and before you can change it, you pull it out and show it to her.
"Ahiru, willyoumarryme?"
You've never felt more embarressed in your life, judging by how crimson your face is right now. But, you know, this would probably be less awkward if you had waited until she was a human again to propose rather than now while she's still a duck. But you are absolute that this is what you want and nothing will change that.
She just stares with wide eyes at the diamond ring. It's kind of cute how amazed she looks right now. "Quack?"
"I-I love you, alright? You may be dorky and clutzy and sometimes annoying, but I love you because you are the only girl I can think of that I would want to spend the rest of my life with and...and..."
You're rambling, but you don't care. You just need her to know why. After you finish, trailing off awkwardly, you watch, waiting for something, anything. Ahiru just looks between you and the ring with a dazed explanation. After what feels like an eternity, she reaches out, taking the ring in her beak, looking rather happy. "Qua!"
"I'll...take that as a yes.", which is recieved with a nod.
Congratulations Fakir, you're getting married to a duck. It will be quite the wedding to remember, won't it? Who's going to come? Is the prince going to be your best man? How about Rue as the maid of honor? One can only imagine Autor giving the public proclamation of marriage...
"You may now kiss the bride...err...duck. I'm getting paid for this, right?"
But right now, jokes aside, you aren't really concerned with that as you take the ring out of her beak just as she was about to accidentally swallow it and choke on it, faced with a new dilema on how exactly she's going to be able to wear it. Eventually, you settle with tying the ring onto a thin cord to for her to wear it as a necklace.
You couldn't be happier.
Imagine the surprise you'll be in come morning when the gods decide to stop messing with you and have you wake up to find a very confused and very naked Ahiru sitting on the floor where her basket once was. Maybe one of those story drafts of yours finally did the trick...
